AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS), the company building the first and only space-based cellular broadband network, has announced a groundbreaking achievement in the realm of space-based cellular broadband connectivity. The company has successfully completed the first-ever two-way voice calls directly to unmodified smartphones using the BlueWalker 3 satellite.
The phones successfully exchanged information directly to BW3, which is crucial for delivering broadband connectivity from space to any phone or device. Additional testing and measurements on the smartphone uplink and downlink signal strength confirmed the ability to support cellular broadband speeds and 4G LTE / 5G waveforms.
The successful test calls have validated the AST SpaceMobile patented system and architecture, and demonstrated the power of the BW3 satellite, which is the largest-ever commercial communications array deployed in low Earth orbit.
Abel Avellan, Chairman of AST SpaceMobile stated: "Achieving what many once considered impossible, we have reached the most significant milestone to date in our quest to deliver global cellular broadband from space.”
AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices.
Shares of AST SpaceMobile trade on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol ASTS.
