5 Things You Need To Know About Lithium and the Green Energy Revolution

31 October 2022

1. Why is lithium so important to a green future?

As part of the global transition from carbon-based energy to an emission-free energy economy, there is a growing demand for lithium to power electric vehicles and store clean energy generated from renewable sources like wind and solar.

Lithium represents the only element common in all battery chemistries, making it the single most important factor in determining the success or failure of the world’s transition to a carbon-free economy.

2. Is there enough lithium to keep up with growing demand?

The short answer is no. Most experts agree that a major supply shortage in lithium is coming. Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk said earlier this year that the lack of supply of lithium is the major factor holding back the world’s transition to a sustainable energy system.

Bloomberg also reported recently that the world will require five times more lithium by the end of the decade and that the industry will need to see more than $42 billion of investment to meet this coming demand.

3: How big will the lithium market get?

Lithium, specifically lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, are crucial ingredients in electric vehicle batteries, and the price for it has gotten increasingly expensive over the last year.

Numerous research groups have estimated that the global lithium market will grow to more than $100 billion annually by 2030.

Elon Musk has urged companies to find new ways to extract lithium, saying quote: “More people, please, get into the lithium business. It’s … do you like minting money? Well, the lithium business is for you.”

4. Are there better ways to source lithium?

Traditionally, lithium has been mined from two main sources: brines and hard rock. In addition to being energy intensive and requiring large environmental footprints, the two traditional sources of lithium will be unable to keep up with the rapid increase in demand.

More recently, companies have begun developing direct lithium extraction technologies, better known as DLE. This new method extracts lithium-bearing brines from large underground reservoirs using existing oil and gas infrastructure.

The direct lithium extraction method pumps brine to the surface and processes it through facilities to concentrate the lithium. The brine is then returned back into the reservoir and the concentrated lithium is further processed to produce high purity, battery-grade lithium on site.

5. Which lithium stock should you be watching?

One company advancing low-carbon direct lithium extraction projects to production is LithiumBank Resources. The company has consolidated over 3.7 million acres of lithium-rich brine projects across western Canada and is currently preparing economic studies. LithiumBank has also identified multiple potentially licensable DLE technologies that could provide commercial scale production as soon as 2026.

LithiumBank Resources trades in the U.S under the ticker symbol LBNKF and in Canada under the symbol LBNK. To learn more about the company visit www.lithiumbank.ca
