BWX Technologies Opens Welding Program at Mount Vernon High School

  • John D. Haynes School of Welding Technology Fills Critical Training Need to Support National Defense Priorities

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. / Oct 24, 2024 / Business Wire / BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: BWXT) today announced the opening of the John D. Haynes School of Welding Technology at Mount Vernon High School in Mount Vernon, Indiana. The company, along with the U.S. Navy and the BlueForge Alliance, have invested $500,000 into the new school to help further the educational journeys of students interested in pursuing a career in welding.

The welding school provides a direct employment opportunity for students from Mount Vernon High School to BWXT’s Nuclear Operations Group in Mount Vernon. Participants can complete their high school degree and professional welding testing on a dual track, allowing them to join the workforce immediately upon graduation.

“Our Mount Vernon site employs the highest level of welding expertise to support our naval nuclear reactor work. This new program helps us fill an important training gap, ensuring future BWXT employees enter the workforce ready to work on highly technical programs that are critical to our national defense,” said Rex Geveden, BWXT CEO and president. “We envision this program will provide a blueprint, spurring the creation of similar high school-based welding programs across the country to train the next generation of welders.”

“Seeing the development of the welding school and its first cohort of students has been truly inspiring,” said Mount Vernon High School principal Scott Strieter. “Knowing our students are equipped for the next phase of life is the goal of every educator, and I’m so proud of the determination shown by our welding students in pursuing this advanced skill to prepare to enter the workforce.”

Named in memory of former fabrication manager and BWXT leader John D. Haynes, the School of Welding Technology at Mount Vernon High School can host up to 60 students annually and utilizes state-of-the-art welding training technologies.
